StumbleUpon: A Thumb-Up VS A Review

by Hamdani Amin on January 27, 2009

thumb-up

I had many request for a comments, a thumb-up and a review, from almost all of my friends at (“SU”).  In most cases,  I like to thumb-up and sometimes write down some review.

After so many thumb-up and review, I begin to ask this question, which one is better, a thumb-up or a review? And why it is better as compared to each other.

A review is actually an added juice to the stumble , what more important is a thumb-up

I had found this post by Tim Nash on Hobo-web, in title “Tim Nash Assimilated – The Idiot Guide To StumbleUpon“, I like to quote what Tim wrote:

A thumb. A review does not effect the amount of StumbleUpon sends through the toolbar, rather it shows on the reviews favourites page on their profile and on the friends home page which can often bring in a few more visitors.

Based on this, a review does not carry so much weight albeit it’s only add a little more traffic from the thumb-up.

A Thumb-up by a power will create massive traffic as compared to just a review

StumbleUpon have a certain mathematics to determine a power stumbler.  It’s seem to be affected by the number of review, friend and per one profile.  It’s also suggested to be friend to active stumbler.  On this basic mathematics, Tim Nash had build a simple model to describe this attribute on his post about StumbleUpon mathematics.

Terence Chang, on his guest post at onemansgoal.com about  building a short term traffic with StumbleUpon,

The more thumbs up, the more traffic you will gain – The more thumbs up a page gets in a short time period, the faster the traffic will appear. If the page has 20 thumbs up in 1 hour (and then none for the rest of the day), it will generate more traffic than 100 thumbs up in one day does! This is why #2 and #3 are important. If the first few have higher scores, you have a better chance to get other with the same interest to view the page. So the page will get stumbled faster than random viewers.

A review is equally important to thumb-up therefore need to be used together with thumb-up

Terence Chang on a his , think both thumb-up and review should be use together.  If we just choose one method not both, it will cary less weight.

Number of reviews with thumb up is very important. You can review a page without thumb up and you can thumb up a page without a review. Either way will carry less weight. So you need to get someone to thumb up and review your page. BOTH!

What happen is I just want to review the page?

So far, I had not found any evidence or post suggesting that a review on any page will provide significant traffic to that page.  Most of the finding that I had found so far point out that the best method is to thumb-up.

But you could have you own opinion on this issue and why not sharing you opinion on the box.

Great Post! Since you have two people giving two opposing points of view, the trick is to not treat it as a way to game the system. I usually give a thumbs up only, if I like the post I will leave a comment.

Reason?

Why give another site the benefit of my time, I would rather give it to the person who asked me for the stumble because overall, we are trying to build our own sites and blogs, not StumbleUpon.

Which is why I am here leaving a post and writing a review on SU!

We don’t really care either way. We utilize SU as some kind of quick bookmarking tool – it’s more convenient for us than the IE bookmark.

Our suspicion is a thumbs up will help the site being given it, while a review will help the stumbler giving it (on their way to becoming a power stumbler, or whatever you call them).

@ccirclee: I normally ask for a thumb-up or a review. Now in the wake of this finding, I think from now on, I’ll ask for a thumb-up.

I do more thumbing up than reviewing, though I have recently gotten in the habit of writing more reviews, not so much for the website I am reviewing, but for my own personal profile.

The point of StumbleUpon isn’t to only thumb up content you like, but to tag the content and review it.

Doing more on StumbleUpon is what will/ can lead to you making it to the Top Stumblers page and giving you more weight when you thumb up a page.

Anyways that’s just my opinion.

I have been using stumble upon for a while now, but I have not really been utilizing “thumbs up”. If I like a certain page content I usually just leave a comment — in this way I connect personally with the content owner. Now that you have mentioned this though, I should really be giving thumbs up for posts I really like. Thanks :)

Well I think they are both good but the thumbs up is the more important of the two. Also keep in mind stumblers are fast paced web surfers and they can easily thumbs up if they like but writing a review take more time so most people are likely to thumb up if they like and occasionally review something they really like. It does add a bit more credibility to review but I don’t think it really adds more traffic.

I generally give a thumbs up. But when I really like a content, I spend time writing a review of why I feel it is worth giving a thumb-up. I never knew that will have any impact on my profile anyway.
As for people that request that I give a review, I do it if the article is worth it. Else, I politely turn the request down. I’m of the opinion that only worthy articles or materials should be given thumbs-up. Nice post.
