Yesterday, we had look at the profiles of money making blog and also some revealing conclusion from Maki at doshdosh.com. One thing for sure, meta blogging, blogging about blogging is not the way to go. That unless you’re really good. So you need to find a new niche market.
What is niche?
Bob Leduc had a very comprehensive definition of niche market, in which he characteristic it into 6 character:
- Individuals in the group have the same specialized interests and needs.
- They have a strong desire for what you offer.
- You have (or you can create) a compelling reason for prospects in the group to do business with you instead of with someone else.
- You can easily reach individual prospects within the group.
- The group is large enough to produce the volume of business you need.
- The group is small enough that your competition is likely to overlook it.
A niche market enables you to target your sales messages with great precision. Therefore, you don’t waste a lot of resources, time and manpower on marketing and sales. You can focus where the actual result will happen.
When do you need to start to find a new market?
You need to start to find a new market when either one of this happen (for the very least, of course):
- The business is already a sunset business ( like metablogging, blogging about blogging)
- When you want to start new venture
- You need to maintain competitive by creating a new product.
There a few tools you can use to find a new niche market. These a few tools that you can use:
- Using a combination of Google Trend and Yahoo Buzz to find what hot and what not.
- Use a focus group like your family, friend and selected few people.
- Using a combination of web 2.0 news sites like Technorati, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, Google Reader, AideRSS and Ask.com BlogSearch.
- Based on Keyword. You may find this tool pretty handy, Keyword Country.
Who should you involved in the process?
The list of involvement could be very long but let start with a small list:
- You (The Numero Uno)
- Your partner
- Your stakeholder
- Your reader
- Anyone that have vested interest or directly affected by this decision.
Do you think your business or your blog business need to find a new niche in order to remain competetive or remain at your current condition?
This post still lack of your contribution, perhaps you find it useful or you can promote it in your own way and give a Thumb-up or some Digg.

So the death bell is ringing (louder). I think there may be some ‘niches’ within the metablogging sector — that’s where the successful ones find or will find that unique / ready-made audience. Another approach might be a team blog where you can synergize and create something different. Bloggers are constantly finding better ways to get to that target group. And you’re right, the smartest way is to define the target first.

A niche market really has its characteristic in marketing term. But I think we have to target our own market (either niche or mass) based on our purpose of creating meta-blogging.
One of the easiest way to do this simply categorized your target reader to beginner (it could be mass market) or advanced (it could be niche) category.

As a blogger that operates in a very wide niche with some success, a niche blogger should be able to dominate their space inside 6 months. It’s all about keywords and laser focus! Great post
