Out of nowhere social networking become the buzz word. Along came the social media marketing. Then every thing tumbling down into Friendster, Myspace and Facebook. If that is not enough, then came social media interactive – Youtube, Google Video and Yahoo Video.
If content is king, and king have a kingdom, suddenly the blog sphere exist. Then everything start to tumbling down again to RSS and feed. Perhaps it too big to swallow and too much competition then out of thin air, micro blogging. Then everything tumbling again into Twitter, Plurk, Jumblr and identi.ca.
If not while you sit then while you on the road, on the move, from the big screen to mobile screen.
That is only the initial cost of social media marketing.
The Apparent Cost Of Social Media
I could start with many thing and from different angle. But let look at three things.
Noise
Of late, with the emerging of micro blogging (e.g. Twitter), the level of noise is much louder as compared to blog when blog was introduced. The problem with social media is – there are more people writing then reading it. You may find this awkward but that what happen now with social media. You can get some ideas on how chaotic the social media from the following post:

Spam
Chris Basking raise a very good question, do you make content or noise? As a blogger or who one to be a professional blogger, that should be a question. Which make my next point, with blog you have splog and the many reason why anyone would do it. And now, Twitter spam or should we call it “Speet”? Perhaps some other opinion may enlighten this issue:
Invasion of privacy
Not long ago, we were shocked by some featured exist in Google Reader that invade your privacy. Now it seem that every time we register with new social media sites, they would ask you to upload your e-mail address from your email program. It like walking into the bar full of stranger and being ask to become their friend.
How Not To Get Burn
Be selective on choosing business partner but harsh on social media freak
Not all noise is bad. Some can be a good social media noise. You need to have your own social media filter. While some noise is good, you need to know some etiquette on social media. Point to note also, you need to deal with the so call social media freak.
At all cost bury everything
In blogging we promote conversation. But even then, blogging may not be a conversation and point to note again, the frequency of blog post or blog creation already massive. If you use blog as a social media then you need to do the following:
- Lorelle, thinks you should edit your comment since comment will reflect the quality of your blog.
- Darren thinks you may get away with no comment, like what Seth Godin do at his blog.
- The worst case scenario, fabricate to the extent of realism, like this one.
What Additional Steps You Wants To Add?
I had put up two of possible steps, can you suggest some more?

Thanks for the great outline of the impact of social media on our blogs and our life.
Unfortunately, it also comes with a price that we readers think we are editors and just go nuts when we see grammar mistakes like “Lorelle, think you…” instead of “Lorelle thinks you…” and “Darren thinks you…”
When our words are our resume, we need to take greater care to edit them – so sayeth someone who triple checks everything and then relies upon readers to point out the rest.
Good work, though!
@Lorelle: Thank you for your comment Lorelle. This is my fault and I will be more careful on the future. Thank you again.
