On The Internet, No One Know You’re A Dog.

“On the Internet, no one know you’re a dog” That was the famous caption from a New Yorker cartoon that explain the problem facing that trying hard to reach out.

Actually Chris Brogan brought the problem up.

He also define a good question, “What is authority on the web platform?”, which bring me to the next point.

Hello, I am an expert and these is my credential (Yeah right!)

The title carry some significant metaphor and I think the cartoon from Jeff Quipp post explain this quite good.  Thus therefore, at best, it’s translate into number and statistic.  Some of this statistic weight so much in term of influence, potential revenue perception and potential net worth.

But authority is not about numbers because numbers can lie and be manipulated.  Numbers good at given some indication and measuring your goal.

Like what the cartoon said:

“Who doesn’t know more than we do..had ‘DR.’ in front of his name.”

On the Internet, even a simple site can have some form of ‘Dr’ in front of them as long as you have the right tools and method to create them.  Funny how web worth can be easily wrongly judged by this numbers.

Substance + = Authority

If I want to simplified what is authority on the web, in the simplest form that will be the formula.  At least to me.

If I want to break the formula further then:

Substance = Good Content + Comment + Viral

Numbers = Web Presence + Readerships

Not all good content invite conversation and but all good conversation invite comments.  A good post that have a good comment will eventually, in most cases, become a viral content that spread like wildfire.

How to create substances

There is no one ways to create a good substance.  May be this post could shed some light:

  3. How to Build an Authority Blog: Tips from the Experts
  4. Why Authority Blogs Are the Hardest But Most Worthwhile

How to create numbers

Again, there is no one ultimate way to create numbers that translate into web presence and readership.  It take time and efforts. Like what my friend, Lisa Stewart say in her blogs’, “As value is a perception and not a real thing then a good ranking in Alexa can mean more money for you”, creating a significant number can mean more money.

You could get some indication on how to create such number on my previous post:

  1. The Success System That Never Fails
  2. The Marketing System That Never Fail
  3. The Beatles And Internet Marketing Success

Throw Me A Stick, I’ll Fetch It

Authority not build overnight.  It takes times and efforts.  It also requires change in believes and expectation.  Sometimes big stakes.

But it can be done and everyone have their own ways and you could have it also.

So how do you make yourself an authoritative blog? Via substance? Numbers? Or using the formula? Or you add another equation to the formula, and what might that is?
