Let There Be Light Said Ebay…

Here we go… Ebay is picking on the digital product owner again. From 31, March, all digital product will be banned from auction or fixed price (To read about the announcement, click here).  In order to sell digital product, all advertisement pertaining to digital product need to be advertised as classified advertisement.  In a move that seem to favour Ebay sister site, Kijiji.com, a direct contender to craiglist.org

That said, as internet entrepreneurs we constantly have to face changing situations so we must deal with these issues as and when they crop up. After all, we’ve seen Google slap us senseless with both Adwords and Adsense, and I’m sure you’ve been bitten by unscrupulous affiliate merchants already at some point (and if not, you certainly will if you hang about long enough). It’s just the nature of the game… we get up, wipe off the blood and get back in the ring.

What To Do If You Have Been Affected By The Ebay Slap?

Look, there’s more than one way to skin a cat (though I imagine they’re probably all pretty disgusting). Here are some things for you to consider if this has directly affected you:

• Ebay has shifted digital ebook ads to the classifieds section, so you can still post your e-book ads in this section (or use this section to generate an opt in list/leads if that’s your strategy).
• You can still put your ebooks on a physical CD/DVD and offer it in the main section. Physical goods are known to result in better conversions and often have a higher perceived value (meaning you can ask more for them).
• Please understand this – as an entrepreneur it’s inherently risky to put all your eggs in one basket…you must work on alternative streams of revenue, especially if you rely on things like eBay or Google for the majority of your business. I’ve mentioned this several times in the course of this newsletter, and if you’re a long term subscriber you no doubt already have a fleet of niche sites that hopefully are doing well independent of the big, bad sites like ebay.

Then it’s time to refocus the sales platform on another site like clickbank. Clickbank recently launch, Platform Globalization, (to know more about this, click here). It attention is to capture the needs of digital product seller, by providing more choice on currency that can be used as tool of trade. What more can be said, it’s time to re-thinking.
